Danger zones: the Guide

The lounge/dining area

Most accidents happen here. It's probably the biggest family room - so there's lots of space for playing. If you want to fight your brother or play a game involving a ball, running, rough and tumble - or all three - then better do it outside.

Hidden dangers:

  • the fire or heater - don't play too close
  • vases or ornaments - don't knock them from ledges or tables
  • cabinets or shelves holding glasses, plates or books - take care.

The kitchen

Some of the worst accidents happen here. Every year over 67,000 children experience a kitchen accident - 45,000 of these are aged between 0-4 years. Look out for your little brother or sister.

Hidden dangers:

  • scalding: small children pulling kettle cords/hot pots and pans from the stove
  • burns: ovens and hobs
  • falls: reaching something from a high cupboard while standing on a stool.

The stairs

Some of the worst accidents can happen falling down stairs. 54,000 children have accidents on stairs every year.

Hidden dangers:

  • hurrying downstairs - don't rush
  • not looking where you're going - put the light on and watch your step
  • tripping up on something left on the stairs.
