Road safety

Top tips for road safety

  • Always find a safe place to cross like a Pelican Crossing or Zebra Crossing.
  • If you have to cross somewhere else, make sure you're not hidden behind a parked car before you step on to the road.
  • Before you step off the pavement, check the traffic by looking and listening. If there is a vehicle coming, then wait for it to pass.
  • Don't talk on your mobile phone when crossing the road - it could make you less aware of traffic coming towards you.
  • Never run across the road - you're more likely to fall over which could be fatal on a busy road.

While it's unlikely that a stranger will try to attack you, there are certain things you can do to make sure you stay safe:

  • Try not to walk around on your own, especially after dark.
  • Stay in busy and well-lit areas.
  • Make sure an adult knows where you are and which route you're taking.
  • Don't talk to strangers. If someone you don't know offers you something, refuse politely. Never get in to a car with a stranger.
