Rubbish and recycling

Londoners produce lots of rubbish – a tonne of rubbish for every Londoner each year! Getting rid of all this rubbish is a problem. Most of it is either buried or burnt, but this is not kind to our environment. So it's important to recycle as much rubbish as possible. Cans and most sorts of paper and glass can easily be recycled - do you have a recycling box at home or at school? You can find out more about recycling at the Recycle for London website.

How many of the following do you see regularly?

  • a tattered plastic bag caught on a tree branch
  • a pile of dog dirt on the pavement
  • unwanted old sofas and fridges abandoned on the street
  • cans, paper, tickets and other bits in the gutter.

Most Londoners see these sights at least once a day. Loads of people live in London – to keep it looking nice, everyone has to be thoughtful. Do you think people should drop litter?

Don’t rubbish London. Love London!
