Getting around

Cycling

Cycling is the best way to get around the city. For trips under 7km it is not only the quickest way to cut across the Capital, but it's the cheapest, the healthiest - for you and the planet - the most fun, and you can get around on your own without having to rely on anyone else. Check out the facts.

Read on to find out about more competitions, events and information. We'd like to hear from you about what else you'd like information on - be it rides, races, shows, or new bike gear. Email us your thoughts to cycling@streetmanagement.org.uk

Cycle safer Challenge

If you're going to be a Year Five student in London next year, start thinking creatively about cycling safety to take part in the Cyclesafer Challenge. You can enter with your school and win great prizes by entering your drawings and designs of protective clothing, safety attachments or safety lighting for bikes.

To find out what it's all about and how you and your school can take part next year, check out the Cycle Show's website. You can view last year's winning designs and find out more about the announcement of this year's winners at Cycle 2005 in October.

Cyclist training

No matter what your age, cyclist training will help you learn to ride a bike if you're a beginner, build up your confidence if you haven't been on your bike in a while, or master the streets if you're an experienced cyclist. To find out where you can get cyclist training that suits your ability, visit the Transport for London website.

Activities

There are loads of different cycling activities in London for you try for the first time or even compete. You can go mountain bike and cyclo-cross riding at Eastway Cycle Circuit or Hillingdon Circuit, or just get out on your bike with your family and friends for a fun ride. Visit Transport for London and www.bikeforall.net for more details.

Cycle guides

There are thousands of shortcuts and routes that only bikes can use in London, and finding them is easier than you think. Just get one of TfL's London Cycle Guides and map out where you want to go, whether it's to/from school or a friend's house.

As from June 3 2005, Transport for London's journey planner will provide recommended cycle routes to and from wherever you want to go. Just type in the start and finish address, print off your map and away you go!

Cycling to School

If your school needs some bike racks or a new bike shelter, then your head teacher should contact your local borough's School Travel Advisor. Schools will be considered for funding from TfL for new racks or a shelter if they submit a School Travel Plan which outlines the need for cycle parking.
