About this website
This website is for young Londoners who are under 18 years old.
It is here to give you information about the city you live in and your rights. It is also a place where you can tell others about what it is like
growing up in London.
Advice from children and young people about our website
Over 100 children and young people helped us to make this website by giving us ideas about what should be on it, what it should look like and how
children and young people should be involved in running it.
Some of the things that they said were:
- We want to know what there is to do in London
- We want sections to talk about the things that interest us like music, and sport
- We also want to talk about serious stuff like bullying, gangs and drugs
- We want to be involved!! - You should have children and young people help you decide what goes on it and write things.
- Make it bright and colourful and use lots of pictures
- Have fun stuff, games, competitions and free offers
- Have discussion boards
Some children said and young people said that they would definitely use our website to have their say about things in London but other children said
that they might do it at school but at home they only use the internet to chat to friends and look at their favourite bands. Some of the children that
we visited reminded us that not everyone has access to the internet (if you are not at school or do not have a computer at home) so it is still
important that we get information to people in other ways as well.
We also know from a survey we did last summer with 11 - 16 years olds that 95 per cent of 11-16 years olds us the internet. 69 per cent of you go on the
Internet at home but you also use it at school, libraries and at friend's houses.
We used lots of your ideas like having children and young people as guest editors, what topics to put up there and making it more colourful.
Some ideas we could not use because:
- We had to make sure that all children and young people can use the website including those that can't see very well. This means that we have to be
careful about the colours we use, the type of writing we use and how many special effects we have or:
- It was too expensive
All of the ideas and comments that the children and young people we spoke to gave us made us think that our website would work best if:
- It had a mix of fun stuff and serious issues
- Teachers used the website as part of classes as well as young Londoners using the website at home.
- There should be lots of opportunities for children and young people to write in and put your own ideas on the website.
Who helped us?
A BIG THANK-YOU to all the children and young people who gave time, ideas and suggestions to help make this website.
They were:
- The children at Tabard Afterschool club - who gave us advice from the beginning to the end and also helped us with the Play feature.
- Young people at Harrow Youth Council - for their advice on cool words and for coming up with the guest editor idea!
- Young people at Kickstart Southwark - for ideas about what should be on the website and ideas about making it interesting for young people.
- Bootstrap Lambeth - for letting us know what older young people would find useful.
- Children and young people at the Temporary Accommodation Project, Camden for letting us know what drawings of London they liked and reminding us
that children and young people who haven't been in London long often don't have access to computers or speak good English yet.
- The school council and Ms Riccio at Aragon Primary school, Merton for giving us feedback on our designs and loads of good ideas for games!
- To the children at Brent ON Track - for letting us know what makes a good site for children and giving us ideas about what we should have
information about.
- To the young people at Fairbridge for writing information for the first young people's slot of the teen site.
- Kids Krew in Newham for recording their opinions about how to make London better for children.
Keeping you safe on our website
It's important when you use the Internet to make sure that you are surf safely and don't give out your personal information to people you do not know.
We want you to have fun on the Yong Londoners website but we also want to make sure that you are safe. We will do this by:
- Only putting your photo up if your parents / carers say it is ok
- Not putting your name and where you are from near your photo
- Checking all messages before they go on the website to make sure that your personal information is not on it and that no one is rude to each other on our site
- Making sure that we do not pass on your e-mail address to anyone else; and
- Making sure that all the people who work on our website have been checked and are ok to work with children and young people.
