Holding the Mayor to account

The Assembly’s primary responsibility is to hold the Mayor to account, by reviewing how he exercises his powers and investigating his actions and decisions. The Assembly:

• questions the Mayor and his advisers and appointees
• examines financial systems and spending
• monitors standards of conduct of Assembly Members and the Mayor.

Open to the public

To ensure transparency, the Assembly conducts its business in public and publishes agenda papers five days in advance of its meetings.

Joint appointment of the GLA’s senior executives

The Assembly and the Mayor jointly appoint the three statutory officers who are responsible for the effective day-to-day operation of the GLA:

• Head of Paid Service
• Chief Finance Officer
• Monitoring Officer

• Business Management and Administration Committee
• Confirmation Hearings Committee
• Standards Committee
