Volunteering has been prevalent in the cultural sector for decades, many organisations draw on volunteers to help with various roles and responsibilities. Volunteers come with different skills and expertise, some give up their time for doing things they enjoy such as story telling in museums. Others feel passionate about a particular art form and give their expertise to develop and grow the organisation as board members. Volunteers play an important role in the sector, without this support many of the small museums and galleries would not open.

The GLA commissioned an online survey to find out how arts and culture organisations and higher education institutes feel about the points-based immigration system and to gain an understanding of the impact it has had on them. The survey ran from 25 January until 28 February 2011 and 122 responses were received from a range of local and national organisations.

A vision for culture across London

The Mayor's Cultural Strategy sets out his vision, priorities and recommendations for how to strengthen the cultural life of Londoners across the capital.

It recognises the significance of the cultural and creative sectors in making London a successful world city, and puts forward a case for its continued support and investment - particularly in the run up to the 2012 Olympics and the opportunity it presents for London to undertake a step change in cultural activity and participation.

The Mayor's Music Education Strategy  'Making Music Matter' was launched on 2 March 2010. It establishes a two-year dedicated music education programme in partnership with a range of key agencies, boroughs, charities and music organisations.

The Music Education programme is steered by a board comprising representatives and experts from different parts of the music education sector (orchestras, borough music services, schools and music professionals.

Embedding Shared Heritage is the report of the Heritage Diversity Task Force (HDTF) chaired by Clara Arokiasamy. The HDTF is one of the most important legacies emerging from the Mayor's Commission on African and Asian Heritage (MCAAH) report, ‘Delivering Shared Heritage’, launched in 2005. The HDTF was established in November 2006, as a strategic body charged with the implementation of the recommendations outlined in the ‘Delivering Shared Heritage’ report.

This plan is for anyone working in London’s music industries. If all actions recommended in this plan are taken, London's music industry can reduce its carbon footprint by almost 60 per cent by 2025.
