The GLA group
Working to deliver the Mayor's vision for London
Four key organisations work with the GLA to deliver the Mayor's vision for London. Together these organisations are know as the GLA group:
- Transport for London (TfL)
- London Development Agency (LDA)
- London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA)
- Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA).
Transport for London
TfL is responsible for planning and running London’s public transport services. TfL also maintains and controls all of London’s traffic lights. It runs the congestion charge, maintains key roads and regulates London taxis and the private hire trade. It is also responsible for the London Transport Museum and Victoria Coach Station. A management board directs TfL. The Mayor is chair of the board and also appoints its members.
London Development Agency
In October 2010, the Government announced that, in line with the Mayor’s devolution proposals published in June 2010, LDA functions would be folded into the GLA by 1 April 2012 as part of a wider reorganisation of the GLA Group to make it as streamlined and fit for purpose as possible.
London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority
LFEPA runs the London Fire Brigade, the UK’s largest fire and rescue service. The authority makes decisions on issues such as strategy, policy and budgeting. The brigade is responsible for responding to fires and other emergencies across the capital, and also promotes fire prevention and enforces fire safety laws. Together, the brigade and authority work on Londonwide emergency planning and with individual boroughs. The Mayor appoints the 17 members of LFEPA.
