Enfield has received £715,000 from the first round and £1.9m from the second round of the Mayor’s Outer London Fund, supported by £278,000 from the borough, to make improvements along the A1010 corridor stretching from Ponders End to Enfield Wash. Though congested and often neglected, the road lies at the heart of the community and is home to numerous businesses, retail and food outlets. A plan that includes physical improvements, business and retail support, and a series of events and festivals is helping to unify the route to create a single, thriving high street.

Hosting events

The A1010 corridor is hosting a number of exciting events funded by the Mayor to help bring the buzz back to the high street. Round One of funding was used for the Christmas Glow festival with events along the high street. A market stall run by local entrepreneurs sold Christmas treats at the northern end, while a temporary ice-rink was installed at Ponders End to the south. A lantern parade was the festival’s focal point. The second round of funding produced the Lock to Lock Festival, a full day of music, performance and food along the River Lee Navigation.

Public spaces

A number of small public spaces at key moments along the Hertford Road are being improved by We Made That to welcome people to destinations along the route. At Enfield Highway, the forecourt of the Enfield Business Centre is being improved to allow businesses to better engage with the wider community. The arrival to Enfield Wash is being marked by a platform with seating opposite Albany Park’s entrance designed to attract people to use local businesses. A new memorial on the site of the historic Two Brewers pub, which was bombed in WW2, will redefine a key arrival point at Ponder End.

Supporting business

The Enfield Business Centre is receiving investment to improve its facilities and promote it as a valuable resource for new enterprises. The centre is being rebranded inside and out by RCKa as an accessible, open and contemporary space to grow business. The refurbishment will improve facilities including meeting rooms, IT provision, and a social reception area, in turn helping to nurture more new businesses and entrepreneurs. A redesigned website will help the centre to make the most of these improvements and maximise its impact.
