About the 2015 awards
Introduction
In 2015 businesses could achieve a Gold, Silver or Bronze award, and/or one of the new special awards. All businesses received a certificate from the Mayor of London recognising their contribution to developing a better understanding of energy efficiency in London.
Small and micro businesses could also enter though were judged seperately.
The Main Awards
The main award is based on the % carbon intensity reduction per metre squared for a business’s London property portfolios (inclusive of owned, leased, whole/part of building) from a baseline (2010-2011) to a challenge year (2014-15). The % reductions of entrants are ranked according to the greatest reduction and the businesses fall into one of the following bands:
The % reduction in carbon intensity per metre squared is based on annual energy use converted to carbon emitted and divided by the total floor space for that year. This will create a value for the intensity of carbon emitted by each company. We then turn this into a percentage reduction in carbon intensity that will allow large and small companies to be compared more fairly using the formula: (carbon intensity CHALLENGE year - carbon intensity BASELINE year)/carbon intensity BASELINE year*100.
We calculate carbon intensity based on the: Total energy use for specified year converted to carbon using Defra Conversion Factors/Total floor space for specified year.

Special Awards
The names of the special awards relate to the efforts of businesses to lead the climb in reducing carbon.
Sector leader (automatic entry)
The sector award performance was based on the same performance metric as the main award, but a business will only be compared to its peers from the same sector allowing recognition of notable sector specific performance..
Novel climber of the challenge (automatic entry)
Businesses that were new to the BEC were also entered into best newcomer. The performance was based on the same metric as the main award, but they will only be compared to other businesses entering BEC for the first time.
Climber of the year (additional data may be required)
Businesses that entered into 2013/14 were eligible for this award. Businesses new to BEC could enter as long as they provided data for 2013/14. The performance was based on the same metric as the main award, but with the baseline year being 2013/14 instead of 2010/11.
Large portfolio climber of the challenge (automatic entry)
For businesses that entered over 30 locations. The performance was based on the same metric as the main award, but businesses were only be compared to other businesses that entered over 30 locations.
Climber of the decade (additional data required)
Businesses can choose to enter additional data for 2005/6 to be the baseline year to be eligible for this award. The performance will be based on the same metric as the main award, but with the baseline year as 2005/6.
Courageous climber (additional materials required)
For all participants that opted in and allowed the BEC team to publish their non-anonymous data in the public domain, such as on the London Data Store. The GLA will not publish non-anonymous data without explicit permission granted in writing from Director or equivalent level in the business that the data relates to.
Team climb (additional materials required)
This award was for the best landlord/tenant/managing agent/facility manager or energy manager collaboration. To enter businesses needed to report the actions that at least two parties (from the landlord, tenant, management agent, facility manager or energy manager combinations) have taken since 2010/11 to improve energy efficiency and cut carbon and the buildings that these actions relate to. This award was judged by a panel appointed by BEC.
Climbing crew (additional data may be required)
This award was for the carbon intensity reduction per staff member. The number of staff per location must be entered. However, the number of staff must only include those working at least 37 hours and spending 80% or more of their working time at the location. Homeworkers are excluded from the staff count.
Special Award for Small and Micro Businesses
This award was judged by a panel appointed by BEC who considered evidence submitted as to the energy saving actions that had been taken.
