Dancing More; Living More
The aim of this initiative is to explore the role dance can play in tackling physical inactivity and improving health inequalities and:
- to make the case for dance as being uniquely placed to meet health and wellbeing outcomes in a creative and cost effective way
- to build national partnerships between dance and health strategic leads
- to consult and explore how the dance sector can best contribute to meeting public health outcomes
- to inform strategic plans for the dance sector
Physical inactivity is a major public health issue affecting both the mental and physical health of the population. In the UK women and girls are more inactive than their male counterparts at every age across the life course. Dance has the ability to reach under-served areas of the population not reached by sport.
Dance is one of the most popular activities for women and girls and can effectively get people active in ways that are fun, non-competitive and social.
The dance sector is rich and varied with hundreds of different forms engaging over five million people a year. Sports and dance are cultural forms in their own right with sports participation being mostly male and dance participation mostly female.
