Volunteering

Volunteering in your local park or green space

Across London volunteers are doing things in their local parks and green spaces. The Mayor is keen to get as many people as possible to come out and lend a helping hand in their own communities.

There are lots of ways you can help:

  • Join in an activity in your local park
  • Join an activity being run by an environmental group
  • Join your local Friends group
  • Start a group yourself taking care or a green space near you

Look after a green space, grow food or tackle a grot-spot

Capital Clean-Up
Each year, we hold campaigns encouraging everyone that lives, works and visits London to take part in a local clean-up event. Every event registered will be recorded, get support from the Capital Clean-Up team and be eligible to apply for an award.

Capital Growth
Capital Growth aims to offer 2,012 new community food growing spaces across London by the end of 2012.  It offers practical help, grants, training and support to groups wanting to establish community food growing projects as well as advice to landowners.

Regular activities with environmental groups

London’s environmental groups run regular volunteering events across the capital. Activities range from hands-on work like cutting back brambles to making a stag beetle home or leading a guided walk. Volunteers get to learn new skills, meet new people and contribute towards London’s biodiversity.

Your local park

Many parks and green spaces have a Friends group who help look after their park and work closely with the local council to tackle problems. Most Friends groups hold regular meetings and events to fundraise for additional facilities. Details of Friends groups will be on your council website.

Volunteering days are held in most large parks. You can just turn-up and take part, no special training is needed and all the equipment is provided. These will be advertised through your local council or park Friends group.
