There are many organisations concerned with protecting, or campaigning to protect the natural environment. They offer a range of volunteer roles from office-based admin to outdoor conservation work.

  • BTCV
    The British Trust for Conservation Volunteers offers a range of roles for volunteers from Volunteer Officers who organise projects and work on fundraising and PR, to Green Gyms and active conservation holidays.
  • FOE
    Volunteers at Friends of the Earth’s London HQ carrry out a variety of admin support tasks including working on policy and campaigns, fundraising, media and IT.
  • Greenpeace
    Roles at Greenpeace's Islington office include help with admin, mailouts, research, data entry, translations, typing, editing, note taking and more, and range from one day to six months.
  • London Wildlife Trust (LWT)
    London Wildlife Trust is the only charity dedicated solely to protecting the capital's wildlife and wild spaces, engaging London's diverse communities through access to our nature reserves, campaigning, volunteering and education.
  • National Trust
    The National Trust has many opportunities from working one of their shops or Community Learning and Education Centres, to showing visitors around one of their historic properties.
  • Natural England
    Helping to protect and conserve the English countryside, there are direct opportunites to get involved at one of their National Nature Reserves.
  • RSPB
    Volunteers are an essential part of the RSPB, helping to speak out for birds, wildlife and wild places. As a volunteer in the RSPB’s London region you can get involved in anything from promoting campaigns, to clearing drains! Whatever you’re looking for, we’re sure there’ll be an opportunity to suit you.
  • Sustrans
    Volunteer Rangers are needed to check on the National Cycle Network, organise a bike ride or walk, lead community workdays, and promote the charity.
  • Thames 21
    Thames21 is an environmental charity working with communities to bring London's waterways to life. Thames21 mobilise thousands of volunteers every year to clean up waterside grot-spots, remove graffiti and create new habitats for wildlife.
  • Trees for Cities
    Volunteer opportunities include one-off experiences such as tree planting days, fundraising events and community and education outreach. Trees for Cities also offer regular volunteering opportunities within their offices in a wide range of areas including research, marketing, fundraising and administration.
  • Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust
    Opportunities at the London Wetland Centre include retail and membership recruiters, education volunteers and aviculture (especially weekends) and office support (including phone cover on Sat/Sun & Tue/Wed). There are also opportunities for groups to do outdoor work.
