Press Release

Livingstone and Giuliani join forces to promote tourism and trade
8-2-2002   074

The Mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, hosts a lunch on Thursday 14 February at which he and former mayor of New York, Rudolph Giuliani, will address leading figures from business, London government and tourism.

Ken Livingstone and Mr Giuliani will join forces to promote their two cities and the travel and tourism industries which are vital to both cities' economies.

The lunch, which is sponsored by British Airways, is being held at Pont de la Tour, Sir Terence Conran's restaurant on the Thames. It comes the day after the former New York mayor receives his honorary knighthood from the Queen.

Mr Livingstone said: 'I am delighted to be hosting this lunch which Mr Giuliani and myself will address to promote our two great cities. This is an excellent and timely opportunity to bang the drum for London and New York and to promote further co-operation between the two cities.'

He said: 'It is absolutely vital that the cities of New York and London, and their tourism, travel and leisure industries, work together to overcome the setbacks we have experienced since 11 September.'

'London has more in common with New York than probably any other city. Our similar size, the centrality of the financial sector to our economies, our similarly diverse populations and our international profiles mean that the two cities have grown closer together over the last few years.'

Mr Livingstone will show Mr Giuliani around City Hall, the mayor's new headquarters near Tower Bridge, before lunch.

Mr Livingstone and his counterpart first met last year in New York's City Hall to establish a formal partnership between the two cities. Mr Livingstone's visit to New York included meetings with senior business figures in the World Trade Center and discussions with New York's police commissioner.

Mr Livingstone said: 'Sir Terence Conran and Lord Marshall of British Airways have shown in their fantastic assistance for this event that there is a considerable amount of goodwill to promote tourism, travel and leisure in New York and London.'
