Leading writers help launch campaign to get Londoners reading

Leading authors, who have written about life in the capital, have agreed to take part in a public signing event at Canary Wharf, to kick start Get London Reading, a new campaign backed by the Mayor of London to encourage more Londoners to take up reading and raise awareness of the diverse range of literature that is available in the capital.

Organised by Booktrust, the national charity for books and reading, Get London Reading is sponsored by the Arts Council England. Booktrust has compiled a list of books intended to offer a flavour of London's diversity, and its inhabitants, past and present.

Authors involved in the campaign include: Diran Adebayo; Martina Cole; Nick Hornby; Tim Moore; Gilda O'Neill; Philip Reeve; Iain Sinclair; Edward Rutherfurd; Zadie Smith; Claire Tomalin; Sarah Waters.

It is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend. In addition, Get London Reading 'goody bags', including free books, will be handed out to commuters on the same day between 8am-9:30am.

  2. The books will be featured on www.getlondonreading.com, which will also reveal the favourite books of notable Londoners. The site will invite all readers to review books and win prizes.
  3. Get London Reading will be promoted through mainstream bookshops and independent bookshops, as well as libraries throughout the city.
  4. Get London Reading will also be promoted through a poster campaign in underground stations, on adverts in tube trains, on bus shelters and on Docklands Light Railway poster sites.
