Statement on admission charges for museums and galleries
29-9-2009   492

Following comments made by Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Ben Bradshaw, the Mayor of London Boris Johnson said today:

'I am very disappointed that Ben Bradshaw should stoop to deliberately misrepresenting my views in order to curry favour with Labour delegates. I did not advocate mandatory charges for national museums and galleries last week, but rather called for more voluntary donations by visitors who can afford them. It is important for the DCMS and the GLA to work together and this kind of political point-scoring makes that harder.'

Notes to Editors

The Mayor of London published Cultural Metropolis last year, which sets out his initial vision for the visual and performing arts, museums, galleries, archives, libraries, crafts, music and arts provision, the creative industries, heritage and tourism.
