Press Release Mayor sets out foundation of Transport Strategy The Mayor of London today (18 May) published a ‘Statement of Intent’ document, which sets out the foundations upon which the Mayor’s Transport Strategy will be built over the coming months. By 2031 London’s population will have grown by a million people and another two million journeys will be made each day. The ‘Statement of Intent’ looks at how to secure the future economic competitiveness and liveability of London by managing this increased demand; whilst at the same time improving air quality and tackling climate change. The document will help shape the official Mayor's Transport Strategy ahead of public consultation in the Autumn and addresses a range of key questions; including how best to integrate land use and transport planning, and how to support growth in outer London. A formal consultation now begins with the London Assembly, TfL, the LDA and the Metropolitan Police; however the Mayor is also keen to hear from a wider group including the borough councils and business groups. The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: “Faced with the challenges of a growing population, an uncertain global economy and a changing climate; we need to set a new course for London’s development over the next twenty years that has at its heart a clear long-term transport strategy. “My vision is for a London that excels among global cities – expanding opportunities, and achieving the highest environmental standards and quality of life. This document builds on the thoughts I outlined in ‘Way to Go!’, and adds further detail to the work we are doing to balance the requirements of meeting future demand, enhancing safety and security, improving air quality and tackling climate change." The Mayor’s Transport Strategy, the full version of which will be published in the autumn, is one of the three key policy documents, alongside the London Plan and Economic Development Strategy that will outline the Mayor’s long-term vision for the future of capital. All three documents are being developed and consulted upon in parallel. ENDS
Notes to Editors · The ‘Statement of Intent’ is available via the following web link: http://www.london.gov.uk/mayor/publications/2009/05/transport-strategy.jsp · The Mayor’s Transport Strategy (MTS) is the principal policy tool through which the Mayor exercises his responsibilities for the planning, management and development of transport in London. It supports the London Plan (the Mayor’s Spatial Plan for London) and provides the policy context for the more detailed plans of the various transport related implementation bodies, particularly TfL and the London boroughs. · The Mayor announced his intention to prepare a new MTS in his ‘Way to Go! – Planning for Better Transport’ policy document, published in November 2008. The timetable for its development allows for two distinct periods of consultation; with London Assembly and other Mayoral functional bodies (spring 2009) and with the general public in autumn 2009. It is currently envisaged that this will enable the publication of the final new MTS in early 2010. This document, the ‘Statement of Intent’ draft of the MTS, is the document with which the Mayor is consulting in the first stage of that process. · Since the publication of ‘Way to Go!’ the Mayor has decided to undertake a full review of the London Plan and the Mayor’s Economic Development Strategy in parallel with the development of the new MTS. This document is therefore being published and consulted upon in parallel with similar documents for these strategies.
