Europe's big-city mayors head for London

The Mayors of Paris and Berlin and the First Deputy Mayor of Moscow will be joining London Mayor Ken Livingstone at the opening of City Hall by the Queen on Tuesday 23 July. This is believed to be the first time that the leaders of Europe’s foremost four capitals have met in London to discuss common challenges and opportunities.
In addition to the official ceremony, Mayor Livingstone will be taking this unique opportunity to hold a series of meetings with the mayors of these key European cities.
Bertrand Delanoë, Mayor of Paris; Klaus Wowereit, Mayor of Berlin; and Vladimir Resin, First Deputy Mayor of Moscow all have official programmes arranged around the opening of the new GLA headquarters by the Thames at Tower Bridge on Tuesday.
Mr Livingstone said today (Thursday): `I am delighted to welcome the Mayors of Paris and Berlin, and the first Deputy Mayor of Moscow, to London. As Europe’s foremost capitals, our cities face common challenges and opportunities. We have much to learn from one another and have developed an advanced programme of discussions addressing key issues such as the environment, transport and planning. Co-operation between London, Paris, Berlin and Moscow will be a powerful force in addressing the concerns of Europe’s largest cities.’

Bertrand Delanoë: Mayor of Paris since 25 March 2001. Born in Tunisia in 1950 and a PR adviser by profession, he has been member of the Socialist party since 1972. Has been both an MP (1981-86) and Senator (1995-2001) for Paris. Delanoë ran in the 2001 elections against the outgoing right-wing mayor Jean Tibéri and the official right-wing candidate Philippe Séguin. He is the first Socialist mayor of Paris. His administration is a Socialist-Green coalition. In 1993, Delanoë became the head of the Socialist Party for Paris. He was elected to the Senate in 1995 and served as a member of the Foreign Affairs and Defence commission. One of his first actions on moving into the prestigious Paris Town Hall building was to scale down the Mayor’s living accommodation and to earmark the left-over rooms for a crèche.
Klaus Wowereit: Mayor of Berlin since 16 June 2001. Born in 1953 and educated in law at the Free University of Berlin, he has been a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) since 1972. He was a Berlin borough councillor 1979-1984 and a local SPD Whip from 1981 to 1984. Between1984 and1995 he was District Councillor for Education and Culture for Berlin-Tempelhof,1981-84 and Higher Executive Officer at the Berlin Senate for Internal Affairs,1984-85. He was leader of the Social Democratic Party in Tempelhof and from 1995-1999, he was Deputy Leader of the Social Democratic Party in the Berlin Assembly. In December 1999 he became Leader of the Social Democratic Party in the Berlin Assembly. Since 1995, he has been a member of the Berlin House of Representatives and between 1995 and 1999, Deputy Party Whip of the SPD parliamentary group. He was elected as President of the Bundesrat on 19 October 2001.
