Case studies

These case studies aim to give you an idea of how to adapt your home and the approximate cost. We chose three properties characteristic of the three regions area. We also gave them imaginary typical residents.

Each case study looks at all three climate change impacts: flooding, water scarcity, and overheating. However, not every home in the three regions is equally at risk from all three impacts. You need to assess your risk in order to decide which impacts you need to adapt to.

Some adaptations deal with more than one impact, while other adaptations can be good for one impact but bad for another. Read more about this but if in doubt seek professional advice.

House

We chose a 1930s semi, with a young family of two adults and three children. They own their house so can afford to invest a bit of money in some of the adaptation measures, and they are free to make any changes they like. But we also included some lower cost 'quick wins'.

Flat

We chose a flat in a 1960s block, occupied by a young couple that is renting. Because they don't own the property, they can't make changes to the building and don't want to spend a lot of money. But there is still plenty they can do.

Block of flats

The same 1960s block - but this time we assumed that the landlord wants to make changes to all the flats at once. Because they own the building, the landlord can make changes.
