What types of event are suitable for the square?

When thinking about suitable venues for your event, it is worth considering if your event will fit with our vision of events on Trafalgar Square.

Events on Trafalgar Square should be safe and accessible for all visitors. The events that work best in Trafalgar Square have often been designed specifically with the square in mind.

To ensure your proposed event is successful, you need to check our list of Dos and Don'ts below.

Do:

  • Ensure your event is accessible for all visitors
  • Plan a safe and secure environment
  • Comply with byelaws and licensing conditions
  • Create a spectacle or an interactive event for visitors
  • Ensure your event is properly planned, and allow plenty of notice for assessment of your event (minimum 5 days, however, we will need more time to assess larger or more complex proposals)
  • Consider its impact on the square’s surroundings
  • Consider the target audience for the event. Trafalgar Square attracts a large numbers of tourist and visitors
  • Remember that you are planning an event in a high profile historic central London location

Don't:

  • Hold private or exclusive parties/functions on the square
  • Use overt branding and advertising within the event – however, there is scope for commercial activity
  • Incorporate offensive or adult themes or materials
  • Stage handouts or giveaways without an accompanying event
  • Use infrastructure or dressing which may damage the fabric of the square
  • Use moving vehicles as part of the event
  • Leave it too late to plan properly – larger events can take up to a year of advance planning
  • Use buskers, and especially not without an accompanying event/ purpose
  • Forget that you are planning an event in a high profile, historic central London location

You must also ensure that your event complies with the Trafalgar Square byelaws.

If your event contains any elements of performance, principally, music, dance, drama or sports and games, you must check our licensing policy

If you think your event could work well in Trafalgar Square, please look at our section on Planning your event.
