Trafalgar Square ContractorsTo keep Trafalgar and Parliament Squares in the best possible condition, the GLA works with a number of contractors. On any given day, there could be many different people on the square – below are details of some of the people you might see. CleanersProvided by the company Veolia, the squares’ cleaners keep the square free of litter and make sure that as much waste as possible is recycled. They help to control litter during events and work closely with Westminster City Council contractors to make sure the area around the square stays clean too. Toilet attendantsVeolia also provide toilet attendants and make sure that the facilities are kept clean, tidy, and safe for the thousands of visitors that use them each year. Hawk handlersA hawk is flown daily on Trafalgar Square by the company Van Vynck as part of a programme to reduce pigeon numbers. The sight of the swooping Harris hawk keeps pigeons away from the area, as it is one of their natural predators. The GLA is now working with Westminster City Council to expand the area the hawk flies, helping to protect the wide North Terrace and its surroundings. Electrical systems and fountainsThe company that handles maintanence for the squares’ electrical systems, as well as some of its other facilities, is Mitie Engineering. It is their employees who are responsible for cleaning and maintaining the Trafalgar Square Fountains. StoneworkDavid Ball Restoration specialises in the care and maintenance of the stonework and statues on Trafalgar Square, including cleaning and protecting the artwork installed on the Fourth Plinth. The company also worked on the complex restoration of Nelson’s Column undertaken in 2006.
