Carol singing in Trafalgar Square

In the weeks leading up to Christmas, Trafalgar Square plays host to groups performing Christmas carols in the square, by the traditional Norwegian Christmas Tree. A large variety of groups from across the country take part, raising funds for voluntary or charitable organisations. All are welcome to come to the square to listen - and perhaps join in.

The Carol Singing Programme for Christmas 2009 runs from Monday 7th to Tuesday 22nd December. The carol singing programme is now fully booked.

Information for carol-singing groups

The GLA provides one-hour slots for groups to use for traditional carol singing at the base of the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square. The slots provided should not be used for anything other than traditional carol singing. A small platform (that can accommodate approximately 15 singers and has disabled access) and a PA system is provided by the GLA for groups to use.

You may collect on behalf of a registered charity for the duration of your hour’s slot. Please note that the GLA has no means to guard or protect charity collection buckets, and groups must make appropriate arrangements for collection and storage.

Groups may bring a keyboard or similar instrument to act as accompaniment to singers, no further instruments are permitted. Your group may also be accompanied by a backing track, however this may occasionally be restricted in order that services and events at nearby St Martin-in-the-Fields Church are not disturbed.

Please note that the staging platform is only suitable for 15 individuals. If you have more than 15 members who wish to sing, the remainder must stand around the platform, however public access across the square should not be restricted.

Further information and final permissions will be issued later in the year when all information on the programme has been finalised.

Carol-singing groups wishing to take part, to raise funds for voluntary or charitable organisations, must book their one-hour slot(s) in advance. If you are interested in making a booking, please read our guidelines for carol-singing in Trafalgar Square. For further information please email: Trafalgar.square@london.gov.uk
