Torchbearers

Classical violinist Vanessa Mae, England cricketer Kevin Pieterson and television presenter Konnie Huq, were amongst the 80 torchbearers set to carry the Olympic flame across London on Sunday 6 April. They joined Dame Kelly Holmes, Sir Trevor McDonald and Amara Karan on the London leg of the Olympic Torch Relay that will travel to 22 cities on five continents, and every province in China, before arriving back in Beijing for the start of the 2008 Olympic Games on 8 August.

Other torchbearers included:

  • Tessa Sanderson CBE: 6 time Olympian and Olympic Gold medallist in the Javelin.
  • Ed Coode MBE: Olympic Gold medal winning rower.
  • Duncan Goodhew MBE: Olympic Gold and Bronze medallist in swimming
  • Gail Emms: Olympic Silver medallist and former World Number 1 in badminton mixed doubles.

Others amongst the 80 taking part were aspiring British athletes for London's Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. They carried the torch on its UK journey towards lighting the cauldron at the opening ceremony in Beijing.
