The Torch Relay in London
On Sunday 6 April, the Olympic flame was carried across London on its global journey to Beijing for the start of the 2008 Olympic Games. The Torch Relay began at Wembley and followed a route through 10 boroughs, past many of capital’s famous landmarks, to a grand finale at North Greenwich.
The following torchbearers took part:
- Double Olympic gold medal winner Dame Kelly Holmes
- Broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald
- Classical violinist Vanessa Mae
- England cricketer Kevin Pieterson
- Actress Amara Karan
Along the way a variety of free events took place creating a unique celebration for Londoners and visitors.
