Cutting Crime
Uniformed Youth
Scouts, Guides, Volunteer Police Cadets and other uniformed groups give young Londoners, particularly youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds a chance to participate in positive activities that build character, responsibility and self-respect. This programme will recruit a minimum of 1,000 adult volunteers to boost uniformed organisations in order to make their significant expansion possible. More than 8,000 young people are currently on a waiting list to join a local group.
Capital Men
The programme provides trained adult volunteer mentors for black boys aged 10-16 who may be at risk of criminal activity, whether as perpetrators or victims, in seven London boroughs with a disproportionate problem with youth crime amongst this cohort. Mentoring at such a crucial stage can help these boys make positive decisions which steer them away from peer pressure to engage in crime. The programme will support at least 1,000 young boys.
Special Constables
The Special Constabulary is the UK’s part-time police force. It is made up of volunteer members of the public who when on duty wear a uniform and have full police powers. There are around 5,000 Specials serving with the Metropolitan Police currently, with plans to increase that to around 6,667 in time for the London Olympics in 2012.
