Wildlife gardening

  • Mulching boosts insect numbers, adding to the food supply for birds, hedgehogs and other wildlife
  • Build a log pile or insect hotel
  • Make a pond
  • Plant a native hedgerow of hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple or hazel to provide nesting sites and berries, nuts and hips that will provide an invaluable source of food for wildlife
  • Put up birdfeeders
  • Encourage and attract wildlife in to your garden with plants and by building log piles and insect hotels with recycled material
  • Put up bird boxes
  • A pile of fallen leaves left undisturbed in a damp, shady corner of the garden or pond plants is ideal for frogs, newts and toads
