Chapter 7 – London’s Living Places and Spaces

This chapter shows how the Mayor will improve the places that people live in, work in and visit. Better urban design, and hard work to make sure our green spaces are blooming and our waterways are clean and attractive will all help to make London a nicer and healthier place to live.

A large part of this objective is to make sure that London’s neighbourhoods are designed to give people excellent access to services, infrastructure and public transport, close to home or work, whatever their age or circumstance. The Mayor will encourage boroughs to engage with their local communities to achieve these goals.

The Mayor wants to enhance the environmental quality of London's streets, places and neighbourhoods. He will make sure that new development makes a positive contribution to existing character, particularly in areas of historic significance. He will encourage development that is safe, secure and accessible, shows off world-class architecture, and preserves, improves and, sometimes, incorporates heritage features.

Beyond protecting London's existing green spaces, the Mayor wants to see improvements to both the quantity and quality of them - providing better public access, promoting biodiversity, planting more trees and woodlands, encouraging local food production while protecting sites of nature conservation value or geological value.

The Mayor is also committed to ensuring that the best use is made of London's waterways. In many cases this will be for passenger and freight transport, in other cases it will be for the purposes of sport, recreation and tourism, and on small rivers it will be simply to improve riverside walks and biodiversity.
