Chapter 5 – London’s Response to Climate Change

The Mayor is tackling climate change by reducing London’s carbon dioxide emissions, managing resources more effectively and helping the city to cope with the effects of a changing climate.

The London Plan shows how development will be used to cut down the negative impact London has on our environment. Energy efficient buildings, more decentralised energy networks and an increase in renewable energy are all key to reducing the city’s carbon footprint.

As London grows, she will also become better at dealing with the effects of a changing climate. This is addressed through polices on overheating and cooling, encouraging urban greening including the use of green roofs, the management of flood risk, sustainable drainage, water efficiency and the management of water quality.

The plan also describes principles for sustainable design and construction as a way to improve the environmental performance of new buildings. Existing buildings also make a large contribution to carbon dioxide emissions in London and this is tackled where possible.

Cutting down on the amount of resources we use and minimising the pollution and waste generated by buildings, transport, residents, workers and visitors will also make London a greener, cleaner and more pleasant place. We have ambitious but achievable targets to improve London’s recycling performance with a goal of sending zero waste to landfill by 2031.
