Chapter 2 – London’s Places

This chapter details special policies for areas of London facing particular needs or with distinctive parts to play in its development up to 2031.

It recognises that London is a complex urban area made up of a wide range of different places that inter-relate and contribute to its vitality and success.

The geographical structure it sets out relates land use and development capacity to existing and proposed transport provision as effectively as possible across London and the wider city region, so that full use of public transport is enabled and encouraged.

Particular policy areas deal with:

  • London’s role in the UK and its relationship with adjoining regions
  • growth areas and corridors linking London with the South East and East of England
  • the 2012 Games and their legacy
  • London’s sub-regions
  • policies to address the particular needs of outer London, with a focus on economy and transport, building on the recommendations of the Mayor’s Outer London Commission interim report
  • inner London
  • central London (the Central Activities Zone)
  • Opportunity Areas and Intensification Areas – places with scope for employment and housing growth
  • Regeneration Areas – places for regeneration and renewal
  • town centres and strategic outer London development centres
  • strategic industrial locations, and
  • the strategic network of open spaces.
