The London Underground licensed busking scheme has been a huge success with the travelling public. The scheme has been licensed since 2003 and musicians have to pass an audition to be a busker on the Underground. There are currently 280 active buskers at 26 different stations who brighten customers’ journeys with live music.
London Underground, who manage this popular scheme will open these pitches – which are like mini stages - for one day only to allow the Rhythm of London Busking Underground event to take place. This competition will promote these wonderful and unique performance spaces whilst supporting young London talent.
‘‘More than 3.5 million customers use the Tube every day allowing thousands of Tube users to experience live performances by the buskers on our licensed Busking Scheme. This collaboration between London Underground and the GLA again offers a great opportunity for young musical talent to experience the unique Underground environment and share their songs with London’s diverse travelling public.”

The Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) is a world leader in music industry education and offers both full and part time courses in performance, production and business. Founded in 1995, ACM’s unique industry led educational model – unprecedented in British education – has already led to an impressive rate of placement within the music industry.
ACM UK alone is home to 1,200 full-time and 400 part-time students and offers MA and degree courses as well as CertHE and BTEC programmes in a number of practical music disciplines including Drums, Bass, Vocal, Guitar, Keyboard, Audio Production, Creative Sound Design, Tour Production and Management and Music Business. The curriculum is focused on structuring courses that work hand-in-hand with fulfilling the needs of the music sector and its changing skill gaps, and has a business development team, which actively seeks out opportunities for its students.
In 2008, ACM won the Queen’s Award for Innovation In Education and saw two of its students, Newton Faulkner and Amelle Berrabah (Sugababes) secure UK No.1 albums, and Camilla Kerslake, currently signed to Gary Barlow’s label Future Records. In 2009, after extremely successful relationships in South Africa & Europe, ACM opened the first of its US academies, ACM@UCO in Oklahoma City in association with the University of Central Oklahoma. In 2010, ACM opened a new and unique Artist Development Centre in Guildford and launched a suite of contemporary music education franchises to attract students aged 5 – 16 to further extend the opportunity for more young people to benefit from learning music.

The British Music Experience is the new national museum of Popular music. It opened at The O2 on the Greenwich Peninsula in March 2009 and fills a void by acting as a cultural provider and giving people the opportunity to both learn and celebrate the history of British Popular music. The museum includes exhibition galleries, learning zones, a music studio, dance area, a live music venue, and immersive audio visual spaces. A full Education and Public Programme, ranging from workshops and trails to full scale concerts and Master Classes, enhances and compliments the experience. It was privately funded and runs as an independent charity to advance the education and appreciation of the art, history and science of music in Britain.

Sound Connections
Wired4Music is the music council for young Londoners hosted by Sound Connections. Following our recent collaborations with the GLA, we've come on board Busking Underground 2011 to run the Last Chance Live Audition. Our young council members will be helping out running the event, filming video auditions and helping out on April 16th, capturing and editing footage of busking all over London.
Wired4Music is a council of over 60 members who actively consult, advocate, challenge and create activities and understanding around music and the role it plays in young Londoners’ lives.
