London Overcrowding Action Plan

16 JULY 2010

The London Overcrowding Action Plan was published in July 2010 to help deliver the Mayor’s target in the London Housing Strategy to halve severe overcrowding in social housing in the capital by 2016.

The plan builds on the excellent work that social landlords across London are already doing to tackle overcrowding and includes many examples of good practice.  Key areas of focus include:

  • prioritising action on overcrowding and underoccupation
  • identifying overcrowded and underoccupied households
  • addressing overcrowding
  • tackling underoccupation.

A general question for you to consider. I am a single parent of three boys, been on the council transfer list for 15 years and I've been overcrowded for 9 years. I had to make additional space in my living room to give my eldest son, who has now finished secondary school. I have contacted several councillors and MP's over the years about this, with some response.I also work full time and have managed to save for a deposit. My question to you is this: Why are there not more family sized accomodation available on the shared ownership scheme? I have viewed, and been refused, several properties because I am not in the criteria to be considered for a larger property. This scheme is to help those, in my position, onto the property ladder, not to discriminate by picking and choosing who they consider a priority.
Thank you and I look forward for your reply
