We want all young people in London to be able to get appropriate education and training.
Better education and training opportunities for young Londoners
At present, too many young Londoners are missing out on education and training and in turn limiting their future prospects. This needs to change and we’re working on it.
Training and education, for example, form a key part of Time for Action, the Mayor’s strategy for preventing youth violence.
Keeping young people in education - Project Brodie
A pattern of truancy is common to almost all young offenders. Project Brodie aims to work with schools and councils to focus on keeping children in school. The Mayor will coordinate action on this and will work with partners to ensure results.
Mayor’s Scholars, London Academies and apprenticeships
Children in long-term care are three times more likely to end up in custody. To help tackle this, and provide help to some of the most disadvantaged young Londoners in terms of their education, health and life chances, the Mayor’s Scholars programme will give young children entering the care system individual educational assistance. The Mayor will also support a number of new Academies in deprived neighbourhoods, enabling students to develop the skills they and London need for the future. The Mayor will also help young Londoners find the right skills to access available apprenticeship opportunities, including in the GLA group itself.
Young people not in employment, education or training
Just over 5% of 16 to 18 year-olds are not in education, employment or training in London. While this is better than the average for England as a whole (over 6%), the Mayor is working with a number of organisations to address the underlying causes and improve this figure further.
LDA/ESF Youth Programme
In spring and summer 2009, the Mayor announced apprenticeships and skills training for thousands of 14 to 19-years olds who are not in education, employment or training, including a radical new approach to the way young offenders in custody are rehabilitated.
