How we work

We work to look after London's best interests in two key ways. First, we question the Mayor and his advisors directly at Assembly meetings in order to hold them to account on behalf of Londoners. And second, we work in committees, to conduct more detailed investigations into the Mayor’s decisions and actions and to investigate other issues of importance to the capital.

The Secretariat Quarterly Monitoring report provides an update on the recent work of the Assembly.

A step by step guide to our investigations

We choose subjects for investigation by considering the Mayor's policies and actions, government consultations and Londonwide topical issues. We often examine issues suggested to us by Londoners.

Once a subject has been chosen, most investigations involve:

  • A formal meeting, open to the public, where invited guests provide information and answer questions.
  • A visit to relevant sites across London and beyond.
  • An invitation to experts and the public to provide their views in writing.
  • Some original commissioned research.
  • A final published report with recommendations about how to improve life in London.

These recommendations are directed towards the relevant organisations, for example the Mayor and GLA group - Transport for London, the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime and the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority - central government, local authorities and voluntary organisations.

Committees undertake follow-up work after the publication of a report to monitor progress against its recommendations.
