A transport system to support economic growth

Our city’s economy is set to grow and needs a transport system that connects people to jobs and allows people, goods and services to move easily within and through the capital.

Around 1.3 million more people – and over 750,000 more jobs – are expected to be accommodated in Greater London by 2031, which in turn, will lead to at least three million more trips each day.

Underground

The Tube is being transformed to enable more trains to run through the central parts of the city, which will reduce crowding during rush hour.

Roads

Congestion on our roads is bad news for all of us, not least businesses in our city. To tackle it, the Mayor will implement a package of measures ranging from the rephasing of traffic signals to better information for drivers.

River transport

We are encouraging the movement of freight by water to reduce the pressure on roads. For commuters, river services will be made more reliable and become better integrated with the rest of London’s transport system and new river crossings will be provided in east London.

Air travel

The Mayor is opposed to further expansion of Heathrow airport. However, he is aware that adequate airport capacity is needed, so is interested in seeing whether London’s existing airports could be used more effectively and would like to research additional capacity elsewhere in the South East.

The development of high-speed rail in the UK and better rail services to Europe will also become a viable alternative to short and medium-haul air travel.

Rail

Crossrail, Thameslink, the East London Line extenstion and improvements to the DLR will create and improve key journeys within London. There will also be increased capacity on National Rail lines and new orbital rail services on London Overground, to make popular commuter routes more reliable.

Did you know?

The number of passengers travelling through London area airports amounted to almost 140 million in 2008, making the London area the busiest in the world.
