We want to de-stress our streets and make London easier to travel around by foot. Discover how we plan to make walking count.
Making walking count
Feet first for London
Walking is a cheap, reliable and healthy way to travel. The Mayor is keen to invest in improving walking conditions in London to encourage more residents and visitors to use their feet.
Making London’s streets safer and more attractive
We are clearing the clutter from London’s streets to free up space and make it safer for pedestrians. We have also created seven strategic walking routes, which are easy to follow pathways through the city.
Making it easier to plan journeys on foot
We are helping walkers to find the quickest and easiest routes. The Tube map distorts the perception of distances between stations. This means many people go by Underground for short distances, when it might be quicker to walk.
We are making streets signs and maps more consistent and easier to use. For example, the Legible London scheme, being tested in central London and Richmond, uses innovative and clear street maps of the immediate area to encourage short walking trips.
Promoting the health and environmental benefits of walking
We are helping people to consider turning their daily journeys into an opportunity to get healthier. A key step is to provide better information about the benefits of walking. We are helping schools, workplaces and individuals to create active travel initiatives to promote walking and cycling.
