Cycle Superhighways

We’re building new Cycle Superhighways for commuters and others to cycle to central London on safe, direct routes.

Why Cycle Superhighways?

We're building the Superhighways to improve cycling conditions for people who already commute by bike and to encourage those who don't to take to pedal power. This will help cut congestion, relieve overcrowding on public transport and reduce emissions.

The Cycle Superhighways project is one of TfL and the Mayor's main ways of bringing about a London cycling revolution, aimed at increasing cycling in London by 400 per cent by 2025 (compared to 2000 levels).

These clearly marked blue routes will greatly improve conditions for people who already commute by bike and encourage those who don't to take to two wheels. These twelve new routes will help ease London's congestion, relieve overcrowding on public transport and reduce polluting emissions.

How Cycle Superhighways work

Superhighways will provide safe, fast, direct ways to ride into central London from outer London. The first two routes will open on 19 July 2010, with ten more being introduced by 2015.

The two routes are CS3 from Barking to Tower Gateway and CS7 from Merton to the City. If you live near to the one of the new Cycle Superhighways watch out for details of led rides starting later in July.

Cycle Superhighways are:

  • Direct and continuous - The routes will be clearly marked and easy to follow. There will be new signage and road markings, and information about journey time and links to other cycling routes.
  • Comfortable - We'll be improving road surfaces and minimising obstructions along the routes so you can pedal more comfortably.
  • Easy to find - Each Cycle Superhighway will have a clear and unique identity. Blue surfaces will also increase driver awareness.
  • Safe - The Cycle Superhighways will be at least 1.5m wide and provide continuous cycle lanes at junctions, advanced stop boxes, and signals to help you keep safe.
