Cycle parking improvements

We are working to create more secure and conveniently placed cycle parks in London.

Removing a major barrier to cycling in London

A shortage of safe and convenient cycle parking is a major barrier to the uptake of cycling in the capital. Increasing the quantity and quality of cycle parking is therefore a priority. The Mayor plans to have 66,000 more cycle parking spaces in the capital by 2012.

We want people to be confident their bike will be where they left in when they return and provide new opportunities for integrated transport (cycle/train) and bike trips to new destinations.

Cycle parking at train and Tube stations

Cycle parking at stations is a good way to help people make cycling a part of a longer trip. Transport for London (TfL) is working with Network Rail, the train operating companies and boroughs to increase cycle parking by London rail and Tube stations.

You can find examples of what cyclists can look forward to at Surbiton, Finsbury Park and London Bridge stations – the latter two of which have secure CCTV monitored cycle parks controlled by an access card system.

More cycle parking on streets, in schools, at home and at work

As well as more cycle parks at stations we are working closely with boroughs to deliver more facilities for cycle parking on the street. We are also working, through TfL and London boroughs, to help schools and workplaces develop more active travel planning.

A part of this programme is encouraging schools and employers to create more secure areas for people to park their bikes, with TfL publishing specific guidance for workplace cycle parking in Summer 2010.

A recent London Assembly report Stand and deliver: cycle parking in London identified the lack of residential cycle parking (cycle storage) as a key barrier to cycling in London.

There is a clear demand for better residential cycle facilities with secure bike parking and proximity to cycle paths now rivalling London Underground stations and car parking as key factors in determining where people choose to live in the capital.

Pan-London cycle parking strategy

To help address all the issues above, TfL will develop a pan-London cycle parking strategy by the end of 2010. The Draft Cycle Security Plan was launched for public consultation on 7 June. Comments are welcome until 3 September.
