Crime prevention
The MOPC will take the lead on crime prevention in London. As well as overseeing the Mayor’s established programmes to tackle issues such as serious youth violence, violence against women and dangerous dogs, new policies will be developed to make London safer.
Work will focus on four main areas:
Operational policing and crime reduction:
- Including stop and search
- During London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games
- Counter-terrorism initiatives
Ending violence against women:
- Delivering rape crisis provision across London
- Tackling harmful practices such as female genital mutilation, forced marriage and so-called 'honour crimes’
- Supporting the development of local violence again women strategies
- Helping girls with gang associations
Gangs:
- Making sure the Met effectively reduce gang crime and violence in London
- Offering leadership by joining up central and local government schemes
- Managing support for communities and local organisations to tackle gangs
- Ensuring proven approaches are used in all efforts against gang activity
Criminal Justice:
- Reducing reoffending rates and crime, and decreasing demand within the criminal justice system.
- Joining up the criminal justice system
- Tackling alcohol and drug abuse
- Helping offenders resettle after leaving custody
- Testing payment by results and local devolution
