Responding to emergencies in London

Members of the London Resilience Partnership would work together in the response to a major emergency to save lives, and protect property and the environment.

The main organisations you are likely to come across in such situations are the emergency services and the local authority. These organisations have specific roles when responding to emergencies:

  • Metropolitan Police Service: In an emergency the police will be responsible for moving everybody to a safe place, keeping people away from the scene and coordinating the activity of the other emergency services. If it is believed to be a criminal attack, the police will also attempt to preserve any evidence
  • London Fire Brigade: As well as fighting fires, the fire service will be called in to prevent any fires from starting and to help in searching for and rescuing anybody caught up in the incident
  • London Ambulance Service: is there to save lives, provide care and treatment to people who have been wounded, alert hospitals, and evacuate the injured
  • London boroughs: will provide support for the emergency services, offer information to the public and coordinate work done by the voluntary sector and other agencies.

The London Command and Control Protocol outlines how we coordinate the response of many different organisations to an emergency.
