Met Office issue Amber alert for snow [3 February 2012]

The Met Office have upgraded their severe weather warning for the weekend to an 'Amber' alert.  In London we're expecting 5-10cm of snow during Saturday night, with icy conditions Sunday and Monday.  This may lead to some transport disruption so take extra care if you're out and about this weekend.  As it's expected to remain cold over the weekend and into Monday morning, consider how the snow and ice may affect your journey to work and plan accordingly.

Members of the London Resilience Partnership met today to discuss our preparations for the cold weather - all organisations have been preparing for severe weather for some time and are ready to respond as needed over the weekend.

Wintry weather in London [2 February 2012]

We may be in February, but it looks like the worst of winter is yet to come - the Met Office are forecasting cold temperatures throughout this weekend, with a band of snow which may affect London overnight on Saturday and into Sunday morning.  This may lead to snow accumulations of 5-10cm in places.

Keep safe and warm and take care if you're travelling anywhere this weekend - have a look at our information and advice on looking after yourself, family and neighbours on our extreme weather page.

If you're a business, consider how snow and ice this weekend could affect your business over the weekend and into the early part of next week.  Have a look at our extreme weather page (businesses)  for more information and tips.

Be prepared for Christmas [19 December 2011]

With less than a week to go to Christmas, being prepared can help you enjoy and make the most of the festive season.  If you’re travelling, check the weather forecast before you go and have a look at the Highways Agency’s travel advice if you’ll be out on the roads.  Check you know what to do to avoid frozen pipes, especially if you are away from home over Christmas – for more information on what makes pipes burst, have a look at this video.  Finally, if you take regular medication, make sure you have enough to last you through to the New Year.

Stay safe and enjoy the festive season!

Exercise Purple Top [25 November 2011]

Today we ran a strategic exercise for senior managers from the London Resilience Partnership.  Exercise Purple Top was a tabletop exercise designed to test London’s Olympic Command and Control arrangements, during which a multi-agency Gold group discussed and made decisions based on a fictional scenario set during the 2012 Olympic Games.  These exercises are a key part of testing our emergency plans to make sure they are ready for the Games.

Stay safe on Bonfire Night [2 November 2011]

Make sure you and your family stay safe this Bonfire Night by following London Fire Brigade’s (LFB) top three Bonfire Night tips:

  1. Attend organised displays – they’re much safer than holding your own
  2. Never leave bonfires unattended and make sure they’re fully out before leaving them
  3. Light bonfires well away from sheds, fences, bushes and trees
