Preparing London
London is generally a very safe place – however there are a number of hazards and threats that could impact the city. In the London Resilience Partnership, we want to make sure that if a major emergency does affect the capital, we are ready to respond and work together to help minimise any impacts.
Who are we?
The London Resilience Partnership is made up of more than 170 organisations, including:
- the emergency services
- local authorities
- Health organisations (e.g. hospitals, primary care trusts, the Health Protection Agency)
- the Greater London Authority
- transport companies
- utility companies
- the military
- central government
- voluntary organisations
- business representatives.
The London Resilience Team supports the work of the London Resilience Partnership.
What do we do?
As a partnership, we work together to assess what risks London faces, and prepare in case we need to respond to a major emergency as a result.
When we talk about a ‘major emergency’, we use the definition given in the Civil Contingencies Act (2004), which is:
- an event or situation which threatens serious damage to human welfare;
- an event or situation which threatens serious damage to the environment; or
- war or terrorism which threatens serious damage to security.
How are we preparing for the London 2012 Games?
The London Resilience Partnership is working to make sure London is resilient and safe for the London 2012 Games by enhancing existing plans, capabilities and procedures to take into account the unique circumstances of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
This complex piece of work involves working with the full range of London stakeholders and central government departments as well as the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and the Olympic Delivery Authority.
The result will not only be a safe and secure Games in 2012 but a legacy of robust resilience plans and procedures for the future.
