Tower Bridge
A new lighting system for Tower Bridge
One of the most iconic landmarks in the world, London’s Tower Bridge is set to get a makeover for the 2012 Games, in time to be beamed around the world to millions of people when all eyes turn to the capital for London 2012.
Plans to replace Tower Bridge’s 25 year old lights with a new energy efficient system were granted final planning consents in October 2011. The state of the art LED lighting and cabling system will be installed in time for next year’s 2012 celebrations.
The new system will help cut energy consumption from lighting the bridge by up to 40 per cent compared with today, while enhancing its world-renowned architectural features at night.
Thanks to a funding agreement negotiated by the Mayor between the City of London (who own Tower Bridge), EDF Energy and General Electric (GE) the new lighting system comes without any cost to taxpayers.
The proposal is the result of a funding agreement negotiated by the Mayor between the City of London (who own Tower Bridge), EDF Energy and General Electric (GE) which would enable Londoners to benefit from a new lighting system for decades to come without any cost to tax payers.
Olympic Rings and Paralympic Agitos installations
Permission has also been granted for Tower Bridge to become the backdrop to spectacular installations of the Olympic Rings and Paralympic Agitos during Games-time. A similar installation of the Olympic Rings is already in place in St Pancras Station.
The installations proposed for Tower Bridge are unique due to the fact that it is a working bridge that opens to let river traffic on the Thames. Over 25m wide by 11m in height, the installations will be retractable to ensure that tall ships can continue to pass under the bridge.
Planning applications
Planning applications for approval to install the new lighting system and for the installation of the Olympic Rings and Paralympic Agitos wer submitted to Tower Hamlets and Southwark councils. To find out more see the individual planning applications.
