Subsidised training
In London there is a significant shortage of skilled workers in both the paid and voluntary sectors of the sport and leisure industries. To stem this shortfall the Mayor has committed £3m towards the cost of training.
In the two year lead up to the Olympics we are hoping to train over 5,000 people in courses such as coaching, officiating, club management, customer services and working with particular target groups, like young people, or people with a disability.
With just one year left to go, we have already trained over 4500 individuals.
Community sports clubs in London are largely driven by the hard work of volunteers. The Mayor recognises that commitment and this programme offers heavily subsidised training (75% off) to people working in community sports in a voluntary capacity.
The scheme also encourages more people to take up volunteering in their local sports club by offering them subsidised training in the skills they need to act as a coach, an umpire, club secretary, or other voluntary role.
