Mayor's vision and strategy
Delivering a Sporting Legacy for London
A key part of the bid that secured the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was that we would use the Games to secure a lasting sporting legacy.
The Mayor sets out his commitment to this pledge in the document ‘A Sporting Future for London’:
'We made a firm commitment to use [the Games] to transform the sporting landscape – providing a lasting legacy of engaging people in sport and providing the infrastructure and support necessary for them to enjoy it.
'We will be doing so because sport for sport's sake should be celebrated. But we will also be doing so because of the huge benefits that it brings to our community.’
The Mayor also gave financial backing to the pledge and secured £15.5 million funding for grassroots sport in London.
This funding is now being distributed according to the three main elements of the programme:
- Facility Investment Programme:£7 million to support investment in small, community or estate-based facilities;
- Investment in Training and Skills: £3 million to support training, for employees, volunteers and potential recruits, within the sport and active leisure sector; and
- Sports Participation Programme: £4 million to support innovative sports participation programmes that encourage greater participation in sport and use sport for social development across London.
In addition to the work that we are doing, sport in London benefits from financial backing at every level. A number of organisations are also working to build a sporting legacy, including central government, through the Department for Culture Media and Sport, Sport England, local authorities, sports governing bodies and of course local sports clubs and charitable organisations.
