Inclusive London
’It is essential that we deliver a Games that everyone can get involved in and feel a part of and today we can see the benefits and opportunities from the Games reaching out to every corner of our capital and beyond.’ Boris Johnson, Mayor of London
The London 2012 Equality and Diversity Forum, chaired by Richard Barnes, Deputy Mayor of London, is responsible for delivering on this vision. The forum is made up of the main 2012 partners, including the Greater London Authority, the Olympic Delivery Authority, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, the Olympic Park Legacy Company, and the Government Olympic Executive.
Key achievements include:
- London’s South Bank, one of the capital’s most popular visitor destinations, is undergoing a £4 million makeover from the Mayor to make it more accessible in time for the 2012 Games
- Launch of www.inclusivelondon.com which provides info on the accessibility features of the capital’s hotels, restaurants, pubs, shops
- 1,000 community sports projects have been set up under LOCOG's Inspire scheme, which recognises non-commercial projects and events inspired by London 2012. 87 percent of projects are integrated projects with participants who are both disabled and non-disabled
Equalities reviews
When London won the bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Mayor stated that these Games would be the most 'accessible ever'. Ensuring the benefits of the Games reach some of the most deprived parts of London – and leave a genuine legacy – is at the heart of Games. We have sought to make this a reality through the London 2012 City Operations and planning for the legacy. In March 2012 we published two reviews that illustrate this Mayoral commitment to this and also demonstrate our compliance with the General Duty arising from the Equality Act 2010.
