The Mayor produces a statutory housing strategy and directs the use of public money for housing in London.
Leading the way to more and better homes for Londoners
He has a key role to play in both housing and planning in the capital. His key housing priorities are set out in his London Housing Strategy and include:
- delivering more affordable homes to rent and to buy, particularly affordable and family-sized homes
- increasing opportunities for home ownership in London, through the First Steps programme
- improving the quality of new and existing homes by setting new design and environmental standards.
- halving the level of overcrowding in London’s social housing sector by 2016
- reducing rough sleeping to zero by 2012.
As chair of the Home and Communities Agency (HCA) London Board, the Mayor is responsible for a London housing budget of over £5 billion in the period 2008-11. He is therefore well placed to make sure that any investment is directed to where it will be most effective.
The Mayor’s vision and policies for housing in London are set out in the following key documents.
