We work with a range of organisations to deliver the best housing deal for Londoners.
Working together to tackle London's housing challenges
The London boroughs
The 33 London boroughs are responsible for housing delivery and for meeting housing need at a local level. They also own, manage and maintain more than half a million homes – one sixth of the total number in London.
Homes and Communities Agency (HCA)
The HCA is the national housing and regeneration agency for England. The HCA is the key partner responsible for delivering the Mayor’s London Housing Strategy, with a budget in London of over £5 billion for 2008-11. London is the only region of the HCA to have its own board, which the Mayor chairs.
Housing associations
Housing associations are the main providers of new affordable housing. They also own, manage and maintain both social rented and intermediate homes. Housing associations are independent social businesses that do not trade for profit. Any surplus is ploughed back into the organisation to maintain existing homes and to help finance new ones.
Voluntary sector
The voluntary sector makes a huge contribution to the lives of Londoners, providing a range of services and support to the capital's diverse communities. The sector plays a key role in the London Delivery Board, set up by the Mayor to deliver his target to end rough sleeping in the capital by 2012.
Private sector
Private sector organisations play a key role in London’s housing sector, both investing in and developing new homes. The particular importance of London’s private rented housing is recognised by the Mayor. He wants to attract new investment to and promote the sector, and make greater use of it to house vulnerable people.
The Mayor’s housing engagement structures
The Mayor has a range of formal structures through which he engages with the capital’s key housing stakeholder organisations. This includes:
