Reusing waste

Reuse capacity in London
The Mayor, through the London Waste and Recycling Board is funding a Londonwide Reuse Network, to make it easier for Londoners to give and take unwanted furniture, electrical/ electronic, paint, bikes and other items wherever they are in the city. This new network aims to significantly increase the number of items reused, and sent for reuse, by London homes and businesses.
Helping you reuse
Recycle for London runs projects to promote and encourage reuse across London. For example, it has organised ‘swishing’ parties across the city where Londoners have been able to exchange clothes, shoes and accessories, and learn basic clothes repair skills, highlighting the amount of textiles that are needlessly sent to landfill. Recycle for London is also working with London Reuse Network to support reuse of other material streams. For example, it is partnering with DHL Enviro Solutions and SWEEEP recycling facility to launch a new, free collection service of waste electrical and electronic equipment from London organisations, for the London Reuse Network wherever possible.
To find out more about their reuse campaigns, visit the Recycle for London website. You’ll find information on how to reuse in London, including tips on using charity shops and car boot sales, and links to online reuse organisations such as Freecycle.
Responsible repairing
From a sock that needs darning to heavy machinery that can be fixed – repairing is invariably the most environmentally responsible and economically sensible option.
It can also be the most satisfying. Rather than throw something away when it breaks or goes wrong, why not fix it?
