Putting waste to good use

Why waste waste when it can be put to good use? We see waste not as worthless rubbish destined for landfill but a potentially valuable resource, and want to encourage and help everyone in London to make more of waste.

Where there’s waste there’s a world of opportunities to:

  • reduce waste – helping to save money and the planet, for example by using less packaging or composting your food scraps at home
  • reuse waste – making more of what you have rather than simply throwing it away, for example by donating your used furniture or clothes to a charity
  • recycle waste – so that less waste goes into landfill reducing waste’s impact on the environment, saving money on disposal costs and ensuring fewer raw materials are needed, for example by turning old plastic bottles into new plastic bottles and food containers
  • turn waste into something useful – for example, by turning leftover food into green transport fuel, heat or electricity.

Promoting, encouraging, funding

The London Waste and Recycling Board has a £73m fund to promote activities resulting in less waste being produced, boost the development of waste management infrastructure to help turn London’s waste into new products and renewable energy.

The Mayor published his municipal and business waste management strategies in November 2011. To find out more and to download the strategies visit the Waste Strategy publication page.
