Street Trees
The Mayor’s Street Trees programme aims to plant 10,000 additional street trees by March 2012 across 40 priority areas that have the least street trees and will most benefit from the social, economic and environmental improvements that these trees provide.
Residents’ groups, community organisations, charities and boroughs were able to apply for grants to plant street trees through the programme. Alongside this, residents in the priority areas were given the opportunity to register their interest to have a tree planted in their street. This information was then passed to the boroughs.
Since the programme began in 2008 over 9,500 additional street trees have been planted in 35 priority areas. Applications for the fourth and final round of the programme have now closed and the final 500 trees will be planted this winter. Successful applicants will be announced later this year.
